SMARTS Beats

SMARTS Beats is a percussion-based learning program for PK-12 (and up to the age of 21) students with developmental and behavioral challenges. SMARTS Beats uses hand drums and other percussion instruments to engage students by promoting academic learning, increasing musical knowledge, fostering a sense of community, and developing pride, confidence and satisfaction.

Originally developed as a pilot project in 2011, SMARTS Beats centers on four goals:

  1. Promote academic learning through unconventional/alternative techniques.
  2. Increase musical knowledge, understanding, and appreciation.
  3. Foster a sense of teamwork and community.
  4. Develop students’ sense of pride, confidence and satisfaction.

We are happy to announce that for the first time in our 20 year history, SMARTS Beats classes are available to the community at our new facility in the Ohio One Building in downtown Youngstown. SMARTS Beats is a music-based learning opportunity for students with special needs. Eligible students are pre-K to grade 12, must be enrolled in special education services through their local public school district and have a current IEP or 504 plan in place. SMARTS Beats classes are taught by our highly trained staff but our policy requires that an adult accompany each student to class.

If you would like to sign-up your child for our Spring Beats classes, please be sure to read the instructions before submission. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via email or give us a call at (330) 574-2787. Thank you for your support of SMARTS!
